Work in Progress
Leaning Bodies for Ages
Leaning Bodies for Ages is a contemporary solo performance exploring adaptation, negotiation and decision-making between bodies, forces and environments.
The work emerges from an ongoing intersection between contemporary dance, improvisation and martial arts logic. Working alongside a grappling dummy, the choreography investigates efficiency, redirection, balance and resistance — asking how a body learns to yield, organise itself under pressure, and remain responsive within changing conditions.
Developed through international research across Europe and sustained studio practice in Tasmania, the project treats choreography as a living system rather than a fixed composition. Movement material evolves through repetition, physical problem-solving and site testing, allowing the work to adapt across indoor and outdoor environments.
Leaning Bodies for Ages is designed as a tourable, low-technical solo that can exist within civic spaces, festivals and unconventional performance contexts. The project culminates in its premiere in Tasmania in September 2026, before continuing toward national and international presentation.
Documentation forms an integral part of the development process, tracing how physical research transforms into performance over time.
